Team Needs: Houston Texans |
|
Hurtin' for: a running back
No, I don't believe that Chris Brown solves the need here. If he did, he never would have been allowed to walk out of
Nashville after each of the past two seasons (he spent a long time on the market before rejoining the Titans last year). In addition, Ahman Green is little more than a name and a somewhat amusing beard at this point. The best hope for the Texans might be Chris Taylor, a guy who has carried all of 28 times in the NFL and who missed 2007 because of injury. Even Gary Kubiak's ex-boss Mike Shanahan – the founder and CEO of I Can Make Any Running Back a Star, Inc. – has used a couple of second-round picks on runners through the years. The Texans doesn't have a second-rounder this year, so they might just need to suck it up and grab a back in the first round – unless, of course, the value is gone by their pick at 18.
Should be lookin' for: defensive backs
Houston brought in Jacques Reeves to apparently take over the right side until Dunta Robinson can come back, but the former Cowboy sure isn't going to scare off any opposing quarterbacks. Fred Bennett developed nicely on the other side as a rookie after taking over the starting job at mid-season. It would be a shame to stunt that growth a bit by pairing him with a human target, of which the Texans have employed many in their short history. Cornerback would make sense if
Houston decides not to get a runner in Round 1. As for safety, things are OK with Will Demps and C.C. Brown, but if the team really liked either that much, it wouldn't have allowed both to reach the free-agent market and would have given out some long-term deals.
Will likely settle for: a defensive end and a receiver
Mario Williams looked awesome over the second half of 2007. The thing that would really help him now would be to put another pass-rushing threat on the other side. N.D. Kalu and Anthony Weaver don't exactly fit the profile. At receiver, Jacoby Jones looked promising, but you can't bank on promise in the NFL without drafting a little insurance in case it doesn't pan out. Hey, at least he got himself arrested this off-season, though.
