Team Needs: Minnesota Vikings

Hurtin' for: a defensive end
The Vikings somehow managed to rank eighth in the league in sacks in 2007 with 38, but nine of those came from linebackers E.J. Henderson and Ben Leber. The team has indirectly conceded that it needs to upgrade at end by making plays for at least Antwan Odom, Justin Smith and Jevon Kearse in a relatively weak free-agent market. The team missed on all three, which passes the need on to the draft. Fortunately, a strong first-round group awaits.

Should be lookin' for: another quarterback
… and they are. The team has already reportedly tried to acquire Sage Rosenfels from the Texans and is apparently in the process of signing Gus Frerotte. I doubt that anyone expects the Vikings to spend their first-round pick on a passer, but it seems quite possible that a second- or third-rounder could be. Minnesota holds two third-round picks and reportedly offered one to Houston for Rosenfels. Maybe Tarvaris Jackson ends up being the answer, but the team can't just bank on that.

Will likely settle for: linemen, a tight end and/or a safety
The Vikings were far weaker running to the right side than the left in 2007. Although it would be tough for most players to stack up with LT Bryant McKinnie, LG Steve Hutchinson and C Matt Birk, Minnesota has to rank better than in the league's bottom third (21st over right tackle and 28th around right end, according to Football Outsiders). Ryan Cook spent his first full season at right tackle, so he might improve in time. If an upgrade is available, though, it would be foolish not to take it. This need would be greatly exacerbated if McKinnie's legal issues cause a break between him and the team.

Much the same goes for tight end. The Vikings might be the only ones who believe Visanthe Shiancoe was worth the ridiculous contract they gave him last year, and he won't win any new backers with 27 catches and one touchdown. A consistent receiving threat there would help the young quarterback.

Finally, safety got solidified for the near term with the signing of Madieu Williams, but the other starter, Darren Sharper, will turn 33 in November. The Vikings need to find a guy at some point to develop behind him.
