Team Needs: Arizona Cardinals |
|
Hurtin' for: a corner
For a team that has fallen short of inflated expectations for several seasons now and went just 8-8 in 2007, the Cardinals have surprisingly few glaring needs. At cornerback, the team is OK with starters Rod Hood and Eric Green but could improve on Green and needs to at least build depth. It doesn't help that through three seasons, Green has yet to complete a full 16-game schedule. It should be a good move to slide former top pick Antrel Rolle from corner to safety, but
Arizona needs some more talent at his old spot.
Should be lookin' for: a running back and a left tackle
I find these two needs inextricably linked, in that current left tackle Mike Gandy would likely be good enough for the line to hold up in front of a younger, fresher feature back, and Edgerrin James is probably still good enough to succeed behind an improved offensive line. James will reach a running back's dreaded age of 30 in August, and he has put up two of his three lowest per-carry averages in his two years in the desert. Up front, Cardinals blockers performed solidly in the running game in 2007, but Football Outsiders lists "left end" as the team's weakest area among the five charted on official NFL play-by-plays. Besides that, a good NFL left tackle doesn't go through three franchises in seven seasons. Don't be surprised if the team addresses one of these spots in the first round.
Will likely settle for: just about anything
Reinforcements wouldn't hurt in the interior offensive line. Neither Michigan-bred nose tackle has realized his potential yet. Last year's third-round shot at inside linebacker depth (Buster Davis) missed badly. Both starting defensive ends are disgruntled and boycotting voluntary workouts. Insurance would be good behind two new starters at outside linebacker. The receiving corps lost No. 3 man Bryant Johnson to free agency. Even the quarterback position has yet to settle under Matt Leinart. None of these needs screams for immediate attention, but any could become a problem if left untended.
