Team Needs: Detroit Lions |
|
Hurtin' for: a receiver … just kidding … a running back
Mike Martz wouldn't have any trouble with this roster that is nearly devoid of backs, but he has taken his "genius" to
San Francisco. Left behind is new coordinator Jim Colletto, who promises to balance the offense and can hand the ball to Tatum Bell, Brian Calhoun and Aveion Cason. The good thing for the Lions is that this year's class of runners is so deep that they could find a guy in the second or possibly even third round. To that end,
Detroit has already hosted
Central Florida's Kevin Smith and Tulane's Matt Forte. Of course, the earlier the team grabs someone, the better than chance that he comes with star talent.
Should be lookin' for: a tackle and a middle linebacker
George Foster didn't play well enough to hold on to the starting right tackle job after coming over in a trade from
Denver. He did, apparently, do enough to get a new contract for this season, though. Even the Lions can't be dumb enough to turn him back into the starter there, though, right?
As for linebacker, the team reportedly tried to address the need with Jonathan Vilma but lost out to the Saints. The Lions have also sniffed around Al Wilson, but he should become a candidate only if they can't find anyone in the draft. The team has already met with
Oklahoma's Curtis Lofton and
Tennessee's Jerod Mayo, who could be second-round options. Of course, Rod Marinelli says that middle linebacker is the toughest spot in his team's defense and would be very hard for a young guy to take over. Maybe we'll get another season of Paris Lenon there after all.
Will likely settle for: an end
This could be either variety, defensive or tight. Dewayne White and Jared DeVries ended the year as defensive end starters and tied for second on the team with 6.5 sacks. Three of White's came in a single game against
Tampa. DeVries will turn 32 in June and recorded three of his in Week 4 against the Bears. The team sack leader, Shaun Rogers, has moved to
Cleveland.
Detroit's best current hope to enhance the pass rush is second-year man Ikaika Alama-Francis.
The tight ends were far worse in 2007. Suffice it to say that Sean McHugh led the group with 17 receptions.
