Team Needs: Chicago Bears |
|
Hurtin' for: some linemen
It's easy to look at the Bears and think that they need to get a runner, some pass catchers and a pass thrower as soon as possible. All of those are certainly needs, but where would any such players be without some blocking up front? According to Football Outsiders, the Bears ranked 30th in the league last season in adjusted line yards (which determines how much of an average running play is attributable to the blocking) and 18th in adjusted sack rate (which accounts for a team's passing frequency and opponent strength). Those were way down from 2006 rankings of ninth and fifth. In an effort to turn things around, the team has given the boot to starting right tackle Fred Miller and left guard Ruben Brown.
The remaining group includes shaky long-time backups, some unproven young guys and Olin Kreutz. Coaches apparently aren't even sure which side tackle John Tait will play. There are plenty of directions the Bears could go at 14, but the best would probably be tackle.
Should be lookin' for: a receiver
Never fear, Bears fans. Mark Bradley and his 38 career catches are ready to take over the No. 1 spot. Marty Booker is nearly 32 and back for a second tour after playing so well that the Dolphins released him. Brandon Lloyd has reappeared after going missing shortly after a trade to
Washington, and he's familiar with Ron Turner's offense from his college days at
Illinois. Guess we'll see what Devin Hester can do. Fortunately for the team's offensive-line need, there might not be a receiver worth drafting at
Chicago's first-round spot. The value promises to be much better in Round 2, where the Bears pick 44th overall.
Will likely settle for: anyone with skill
Chicago basically needs everything on offense other than a tight end. Everything starts with the line, and receiver is the hot topic after Bernard Berrian and Muhsin Muhammad left, but the Bears still need to solve running back and quarterback. They can barely even afford to look at defense, where another safety would help and defensive tackle depth is sparse. (By the way, this team's second-leading receiver last season – after Berrian – was backup running back Adrian Peterson. Ouch.)
