Team Needs: Denver Broncos |
|
Hurtin' for: some blockers
Although it says that it hasn't been updated since Dec. 18, the depth chart on the Broncos' official website currently boasts blanks as the starters at left tackle and center. That's because LT Matt Lepsis has retired and C Chris Myers – who filled in serviceably after Tom Nalen's injury last season – has been traded to
Houston. Nalen will be back this year, but he'll also be 37 when it begins. At tackle,
Denver might have already drafted Lepsis' replacement in Ryan Harris, but he and Eric Pears are the only tackles listed on the roster. That won't do it, especially because the Broncos fell well short of excelling when running to the right side last season.
Should be lookin' for: receiver help
Keary Colbert was once supposed to be promising and caught 47 passes as a rookie for the Panthers in 2004. He has yet to get back to that level and failed to reach the end zone a single time over the past two seasons. Brandon Stokley continues to hang around, but hoping for anything more than 50 catches from him would be foolish. He has only surpassed 41 once in 10 seasons with three teams. Perhaps Glenn Martinez is a hidden gem, but it took him three years in the league to start a game and catch 14 balls. This was a need before Brandon Marshall put an arm through whatever was closest to him on vacation, so his suddenly uncertain status only enhances the focus. The other guys on the roster are unproven (Marquay McDaniel) or castoffs (Taylor Jacobs).
Will likely settle for: defensive backs
The signings of Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel and the return of John Lynch lessen the need for immediate attention at safety, but the group is getting old. If McCree wins the starting job next to Lynch, all four starters will be at least 30 come opening day. The coaches seem to like Karl Paymah and Domonique Foxworth to some degree but not enough to make either a full-time starter in his first three seasons. Hamza Abdullah took over the strong safety job in the middle of last season, but the additions of two veterans with lots of starting experience can only mean that the coaches weren't satisfied.
