Team Needs: New Orleans Saints |
|
Hurtin' for: a corner
The Saints carried the same top need last winter and decided to address it by signing Jason David away from the Colts. In case you missed it, Indy's reaction was a shrug. David was terrible in his first season in
New Orleans, and the Colts actually got better at corner by promoting the 2006 backups. This year, the Saints added Randall Gay, who should at least be better than David. The corner need was exacerbated, though, by Mike McKenzie tearing up his knee in the season's final game. He could miss all of 2008, which would keep David in a starting role. Time to draft a corner early, as long as one grades out as a No. 10 pick.
Should be lookin' for: a safety and a linebacker
The team also failed to enhance these two spots in 2007 when it brought in Kevin Kaesviharn and Brian Simmons. Simmons couldn't even stave off Mark Simoneau. Kaesviharn became another uninspiring part of a pass defense that tied for the most TD passes allowed, yielded the league's highest passer rating and picked off the fifth-fewest passes. He'll also turn 32 before this season begins.
New Orleans traded for Jonathan Vilma to strengthen the middle of the defense, but he'll need to prove healthy after a knee injury ended his 2007. Dan Morgan also joined the team, but relying on him for anything would be like trusting a wet paper bridge to support your car. Starters on hand at safety and linebacker keep the needs from being immediate, but the team could stand to get stronger at each spot.
Will likely settle for: a tight end or defensive tackle
Because the team has so many options on offense, Eric Johnson and Billy Miller can suffice. If a more athletic and healthier kid is sitting there in the draft, though, it certainly wouldn't hurt to bring him aboard. There are bodies at defensive tackle as well, but Hollis Thomas and Brian Young are both on the wrong side of 30 and have both missed games over the past two seasons. The other options are OK but unexciting.
