Team Needs: Baltimore Ravens |
|
Hurtin' for: a quarterback
There are plenty of needs in Baltimore, but when your decision under center is between Troy Smith, Kyle Boller and the disintegrating corpse of Steve McNair, I'd say that need trumps the others. Smith played solidly in his short starting stint at the end of last season, and it's possible he'll be the answer. Even the coaches don't seem to believe that at this point, though, as they talk about McNair as the likely starter in 2008. Seriously.
Should be lookin' for: a receiver and a corner
Derrick Mason is getting old. Mark Clayton has yet to start for a full season and didn't score a single touchdown in 2007. Demetrius Williams' breakthrough is still only a theory. Yamon Figurs caught just one pass last year and will have to prove he's more than a returner. Devard Darling is gone. Another option would help whatever sucker ends up taking the snaps.
On the other side of the line, both Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle are getting old and missed significant time last season. The backups didn't hold up when thrust into more prominent roles. They look more like a bunch of nickelbacks (even though they might wanna be big rock stars). The eighth pick might be too early for any of this year's top corners, but the Ravens should look at that spot on the first day.
Will likely settle for: linemen
This could be true for just about any team in the league, but the Ravens in particular are staring at the ends of the careers of OT Jonathan Ogden (any day now) and DL Trevor Pryce (any year now).
Baltimore is strong on the D-line with Kelly Gregg, Haloti Ngata and surprisingly good fill-in work from Dwan Edwards in 2007, but it never hurts to bring in more depth there. There are options on offense, too, where Jared Gaither could be the heir on the left side and Adam Terry ready on the right. The middle and late rounds are fertile ground for developmental blockers, though.
