Hurtin' for: a running back
Thomas Jones seemed like he should have worked out, but he didn't in 2007. He ran for nearly a yard and a half less per carry than Leon Washington and one-third of his teammate's touchdown total. Granted, the Jets offensive line was nothing special, but it did perform better on running plays than in 2006, according to Football Outsiders' adjusted line yards (which measures rushing yardage attributable to the blocking). Jones' 3.6 yards per attempt were his lowest since 2001, back when he was a first-round draft bust in
Arizona. Add to that his average of 307 carries over the past three seasons and the fact that Jones will turn 30 in August, and it's tough to expect much improvement, even with Alan Faneca in tow.
Washington is a very nice complementary back but doesn't have the body or running style to hold up over 300 carries. This need isn't so much more pressing than others that the Jets would be foolish to pass on a first-round runner, but it needs attention if they want to return to the playoffs.
Should be lookin' for: pass-rush help
New outside linebacker Calvin Pace fits into that category, but he suddenly went from disappointment to stud in 2007. Who knows for sure whether he finally broke out because he found his proper role after coming into the league as an end or if he was motivated by looming free agency? Even if 2007 wasn't a fluke for Pace, he could use some help. OLB Bryan Thomas offered up a hugely disappointing 2.5 sacks last season after 8.5 in 2006 and could be replaced. If a player such as
Auburn's Quentin Groves is sitting there in Round 2, the Jets should jump on him. The team could also stand to get stronger at end, with Shaun Ellis and Kenyon Coleman providing little to brag about.
Will likely settle for: D-backs and blockers
Sure, they just drafted Darrelle Revis in Round 1 last year, but if Ty Law is any part of the equation at this point, you know the team is a little hard up at corner. At safety, the team apparently likes Abram
Elam better than Erik Coleman alongside Kerry Rhodes, because it kept the former and let the latter walk. Perhaps
Elam is the answer, but with him having just eight starts behind him, I'd at least want some insurance. And I mean more than Eric Smith. As for the offensive line, a 31-year-old Faneca should help this year, and who knows, maybe Damien Woody will finally find motivation after nine overweight seasons. If I were a Jets decision maker, though, I'd be looking for a right tackle and a young guard.
