Strengths: Reliable route runner and pass catcher.
Weaknesses: Speed and raw power as a blocker.

Statline: 40 catches for 372 yards and three touchdowns in 2007.

Technique: Won't overpower anyone as a blocker, but has good technique. Good route runner in short and medium patterns.

Known Injuries: Missed the final two regular season games in 2006 with a knee problem.

Combine / Workout Assessment: COMING SOON

Analysis: Carlson did an excellent job of replacing former Irish tight end Anthony Fasano, who was a second-round selection (53rd overall) of the Cowboys in 2006. John developed into Notre Dame’s best receiving option last season, although don’t pigeonhole him as a Jeremy Shockey clone; Carlson has shown the ability to both catch the ball and dish out blocks on a consistent basis. He doesn’t have the athletic ability to be a game changer and he likely won’t hear his name called as early as Fasano did two years ago, but his all-around skill set will make him on of the first few tight ends to be picked. He will see the field as a rookie.

Recent News:
Carlson became the second tight end off the board when he went to Seattle at pick No. 38.
Insight: Every West Coast offense needs a good tight end, and Carlson was considered one of the top TE prospects before some disappointing offseason workouts. (Marc Pruitt/SportsBuff.com)
