Strengths: Strong arm and quick release. Reads defenses well
Weaknesses: Injury history. Inconsistent with mechanics and technique.

Statline: 5,708 yards and 52 touchdowns in two seasons as the starter despite missing time due to injuries. Completed 62 percent of his passes in that span.

Technique: Well-suited for the West Coast offense

Known Injuries: Broken finger on middle finger of throwing hand cost him three games in 2007. Surgery on herniated disc in back in spring of 2006. Redshirted in 2004 due to badly bruised throwing elbow. Broke non-throwing wrist in 2003.

Combine / Workout Assessment: COMING SOON

Analysis: Booty’s father and brother both played quarterback at the collegiate level, and after holding a clipboard behind Matt Leinart you could say John David has been groomed for this role. His intelligence, quick release, and solid skill set give him plenty of NFL upside, and he would thrive in a West Coast offense. However, as you might expect from a player who spent so much time as a backup, he needs to develop more consistency with his footwork and technique. Pro scouts also worry that he’s a bit undersized; he has more than his share of passes knocked down at the line of scrimmage (see: Oregon State, 2006) and his injury history indicates he hasn’t held up all that well at the collegiate level. Given good protection and the right system, Booty could be successful at the pro level. However, since he should understudy—again—for a couple years first, we'll have to wait at least a little bit for Booty time.

Recent News:
Booty went to the Vikings in the fifth round on Sunday.
Insight: The former Trojan offers tremendous value three rounds after Brian Brohm and Chad Henne came off the board. He could factor into the starter competition as soon as 2009, depending on how Tarvaris Jackson progresses -- or doesn't -- this season. (Matt Schauf/SportsBuff.com)
